An estimated 1000 people have been killed on Zimbabwe's Chiadzwu diamond fields since the signing of the unity government agreement more than a year ago.

And the killing of diamond panners by state agencies continues, says the Centre for Research and Development, a Mutare rights-advocacy group.

Many more panners have been tortured, the group says.

People living in eastern Zimbabwe have been displaced as the area has been militarised.

A documentary on the criminalisation of the panners, Zimbabwe's Blood Diamonds, is to be shown on Special Assignment on SABC3 tonight.

According to the documentary, many of the diamonds from these rich alluvial fields are sold on the black market, leaving the country through its porous borders.

The money earned has been used to support President Robert Mugabe's power base, fuelling Zimbabwe's social, political and economic crisis. The income from the diamonds -said to be about R7.5-million a month- could fund the reconstruction of the country, researchers say.

The rights group's Farai Maguwu said: ''We are not poor because the country is poor but because of the mismanagement of natural resources."

Zimbabwe's Blood Diamonds
written by Christian Allard, August 24, 2010
One would have to explain to me why we are now talking of Zimbabwe's Blood Diamonds and how those diamonds could fund the reconstruction of the country if they were going into the right hands.
British mining corporations have abused the human rights of the people of Africa for generations funding the lifestyle of the British Establishment but as soon as the profit is getting into black hands, the world media is upset.
Let's see how diamonds have been benefiting Zimbabwe up to now:
Blood money: the MPs cashing in on Zimbabwe's misery

If people are so eager to blame a government, have a go at my own MP sitting at Westminster on the UK government benches reaping the profit of Zimbabwe natural resources:
Sir Robert Smith, Lib Dem MP for Aberdeenshire West & Kincardine, has shares in Rio Tinto.

Read what he thinks Britain should do to defend his family's interests in Zimbabwe:

Sir Robert Smith (West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine) (LD): I should declare an interest, as my nephew is a Zimbabwean who has been evicted from farmland.
The hon. Gentleman mentioned the change in process that led to the collapse in productive capacity. One of the biggest underlying problems is that, because the process does not give legal title to the new owners and the transfer has no proper legal underpinning, the new owners have no means of investing in the farms. We therefore need to bring back legal stability and a proper legal process to land ownership in countries such as Zimbabwe, to enable investment for the future so that productive capacity can be restored.
