In the distance, he could see someone driving a stolen tractor with his firefighting equipment. The tractor kept moving, ignoring the flames. Wednesday morning, just three days after the first blaze, another mysterious fire erupted. It destroyed the farm of his 76-year-old father-in-law, who was nearly killed in a beating last year. The two suspected arson attacks were the latest blow to Zimbabwe's dwindling band of white farmers. Besieged by farm invaders, stripped of their possessions, menaced by armed thugs, many of the few hundred remaining farmers are on the verge of giving up. Mr. Freeth, a deeply religious man, insists that he will stay and fight. At the age of 39, he has three young children who were distraught at the fire and the recent attacks.
